Cool Picks for Summer Fun

It’s summertime, and you know what that means. Hot weather, bored kids—how do you make sure their brains don’t turn to mush? What’s a Houston family to do? Turn off the TV and leave your ATM card at home, because we have some ideas for how to have fun on a budget during the steamiest season of the year.

This summer, head over to Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park. With a variety of daytime and evening performances, there’s something to entertain everyone. The best part? Every single performance is free of charge. Upcoming shows include “42nd Street” and “Alice in Wonderland.” Check out www.milleroutdoortheatre.com for a full schedule and information on how to get seats under the canopy. Or, bring a picnic and a blanket  or lawn chair and relax on the hill. It’s free, it’s fun, it’s for everyone.

Can your mind come out to play?  There's always something new to do every day at the Children's Museum of Houston.  Just $7 buys all-day admission for adults and children older than one.  Museum members get free admission. Check out the brand new Kidtropolis, where kids get their own debit card, work different jobs and learn about financial responsibility, the Invention Convention, where they can let our their inner Da Vinci, and more. I frequented both of these spots when I was little. They were great then, but they are phenomenal now. Grown ups will be sure to enjoy just as much as their kids.

I visited the children's museum in 2nd grade and loved having fun informative activities to do, I visited again as a 19-year-old and had to restrain myself from playing on everything. Keep kids' minds occupied with fun constructive things! (especially little boys)

This past week has been hot hot HOT! I found the perfect cool-off combo is to spend the day at the Children's Museum and in the evening take a stroll to Miller Outdoor Theatre for a show. Not only fun for families but makes for a great date night too!
